Al-Ajurrumiyah or Jurumiyah (Arabic: الآجُرُّومِيَّة) is a small book about Arabic grammar from the 7th century H / 13 AD. This book was composed by a Moroccan linguist named Abu Abdillah Sidi Muhammad bin Daud Ash-Shanhaji aka Ibnu Ajurrum (d. 1324 AD). Basic formulas for classical Arabic lessons are written in rhyming form to make it easier to memorize. In the Arab community this book is one of the earliest books memorized in addition to the Qur'an. [1]

Description

In traditional Islamic boarding schools, the Book of Matan al-Ajurrumiyyah is a textbook about the very famous nahwu (Arabic language grammar). Almost every santri studying in a traditional boarding school begins his study of Arabic through this book. This book is a standard book which is the basis of Arabic learning. In practice in the world of pesantren, the book is often referred to as Jurrumiyyah. The name is not exactly the same as the original name of the book, because the full title of the book is al-Muqaddimah al-Ajurrumiyyah fi Mabadi ’Ilm al-Arabiyyah.

Although al-Ajurrumiyyah was so famous among the pesantren, the author of the book itself was not well known among the pesantren. That is because in practice in pesantren, santri are often only presented with the lessons contained in the book being studied. Santri are rarely introduced by the cleric or cleric with the author of the book they are studying. This is also natural because the cleric or the cleric himself does not necessarily know who the author of the book is.

As the name implies, al-Ajurrumiyyah is indeed the book muqaddimah (introduction) about the science of nahwu written by Ibnu Ajurrum while in Mecca. The contents are very simple and basic. For this reason, this book also needs to be given a deeper explanation when a santri wants to learn more about the science of nahwu. For this reason, the book was finally given many explanations by many scholars, reaching thirty explanatory books. These explanations will later be made into a book with al-Ajurrumiyyah. In the Arabic literature, the books that contain an explanation of another book are referred to as the book of sharah.

In addition to being given an explanation or review, the book of al-Ajurrumiyyah is also summarized by other scholars to become a string of stanzas (nazham). No less than four books that contain a string of stanzas originating from the book al-Ajurrumiyyah. The most famous book of stanzas is written by Muhammad bin Abi al-Ghalawi or known as Ubaid Rabbih.
