A compass is a navigational and guidance based on magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials and the Earth's magnetic field. The word comes from the Italian compass compass, which means "little box" of boxwood.

The compasses are usually composed of a magnetized needle placed in a horizontal plane and suspended by its center of gravity so that it can rotate freely, and that always orients itself toward the next north-south geographical direction to take to Toe - usually in red - indicating the direction that leads to the magnetic south of the Earth, or equivalently, the one near the geographic north pole of the Earth point.

The compass is a navigational instrument that allows to find or determine directions. It consists of a magnetized pointer free to align itself accurately with Earth's magnetic field. The compass provides a known reference direction which is useful in navigation. The cardinal points are north, south, east and west. A compass can be used to sextant and a clock to provide a very accurate navigation capability. This device greatly improved maritime trade by making safer and more efficient travel.

Magnetic declination:
Magnetic declination is the inconsistency that occurs between the markings of the compass defined by astronomical and geographical position.

Magnetic declination is the difference "in degrees" appointed by ground magnetic north and true north, determined by the rotational axis of the planet that have no obligation to match the magnetic attraction.

As a convention it was decided that, comparing the deviation to the cardinal points formed to the right of the north (east) angle would be positive or to the left (west) negative; which is a function of terrestrial magnetism, created or arising by terrestrial electromagnetism generated by the friction of the earth's rotational movement; and whose poles do not always coincide with the geographic poles. Believed to have been the Vikings or the Portuguese to discover this phenomenon in the famous School of Sagres, there are also those who argue that it was Christopher Columbus, but the Chinese were the first to realize the usefulness of magnetic needle during the fogs and that although there was the need to point to true north, the direction of the needle was used to avoid navigating circle and thereby crossing the fogs. Even then noticed that the deviation was then referred to as nordestear or noroestear, depending on the deviation occurred east or west.
