The Literacy Challenge Project in the Arab World is a means of compensating people for the opportunities of formal education and a way to combat the serious problem of illiteracy that is burdening the region. It is also a means of narrowing the gender gap in education and achieving education for all. The Literacy Project in the Arab World, in addition to literacy, will help provide people with the skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively to the growing challenges of new technologies, the information age and vocational training.

Informal education for adults is defined as any organized educational activity carried out outside the formal school system and educational system. Adult non-formal education has become more diverse in terms of levels, objectives, content, methodologies, teaching and learning skills, monitoring progress and evaluating results. The Literacy Project in the Arab World aims to meet the educational needs of students who are not enrolled in formal education, who have left school or who have not had access to formal education, for social and economic reasons, as well as the failure of basic education systems to retain students. These may be adults, young people or children. In the Arab region, women and girls who have not had the same opportunities as men or boys make up a large proportion of the illiterate.
