Julius Karlovich Trapp (1814-1908). '94

Prominent Russian pharmacist and pharmacologist of the XIX century., The successor of AP Nelyubina the department in St. Petersburg Medical-Surgical Academy, academician and professor emeritus.

Born in Marijampole Suwalki province (Marijampole, Lithuania) in 1814 in the family pharmacist. Initially brought up in one of Polish schools, and then moved to the gymnasium of Tilsit (East Prussia).

After high school in Tilsit JK Trapp joined for practical study in pharmacy drugstore: in 1832 he entered the apothecary students, and in 1836 passed the exam for the title of pharmacy assistant.
The circumstances of his personal life were such that JK Trapp soon had to return to the Russian Empire and re-take the exam for the title of pharmacy assistant at Warsaw physician's board, where he attended the School of Pharmacy.

Pomoschnichesky Trapp accumulating experience already in St. Petersburg, where he lived and then nearly 60 years of his life. Working in St. Petersburg pharmacies, in 1839 he enrolled in the Medical-Surgical Academy in St. Petersburg (1881 - Military Medical Academy), where he passed the test for the degree of the pharmacist. In 1843 he was appointed associate a laboratory of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the St. Petersburg Medical-Surgical Academy.
An interesting fact is that during this period (1847-1853 gg.) JK Trapp gave private lessons to the young Alfred Nobel chemistry (he at that time was 14-20 years old) and his brothers Robert and Ludvig, and instill in them an interest in nitroglycerine, which is then itself A. Nobel recalled in his autobiography (Nobels family from 1842 to 1863. lived in St. Petersburg). A. Nobel wrote: "Professor Zinin and Professor Trapp in St. Petersburg ... speculated that nitroglycerin may be useful, and brought him to the attention of my father, who was then, due to the Crimean War, created the sea mines for the Russian government. My father tried, but could not get it to explode ... ".
So that the subsequent invention of dynamite (in 1867), and the appearance of the Nobel Prize has become possible, including through private lessons and professors (at that time - still an associate professor) JK Trapp.
In 1848, JK Trapp passed the exam for the degree of Master of Pharmacy, associate professor (assistant professor) was elected for the next year, and from 1856 to 1877 became a full professor and head of the department of pharmacy of the St. Petersburg Medical-Surgical Academy. Even before obtaining the post of full professor in 1856. He was sent for revision of the Crimean pharmacies.
In the Medical-Surgical Academy, and then (after transformation in 1881) at the Military Medical Academy, Professor JK Trapp taught pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy, formulation and discovery of poisons. He managed to teach a pharmacy and at the University for Women.
These disciplines are usually not mandatory to attend, as a rule, do not take the students' attention, but Professor YK Trapp has managed to turn a lecture to these supposedly "boring" subjects in the fun for the audience - in his audience has traditionally been sold out.
In 1858, JK Trapp was appointed a member of the Medical Council of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Empire and led the pharmaceutical department of the second military land hospital.
In 1862, JK Trapp was awarded the rank of State Councilor, and soon approved an honorary member of the Military Medical Academic Committee. In 1866 he was elected an academician, and in 1877 for outstanding achievements in the field of pharmacy awarded the title of Distinguished Professor.
