BlueWhale shifts very high pitched sounds down where human hearing is best, so you can have fun listening to sounds you might not ordinarily hear. Ultrasonic sounds are emitted by bats for example. Elephants and whales produce very low pitched sounds known as infrasound. (Although this software isn’t going to help you out with whales unless you have a hydrophone.) Many surprises await in ordinary things around the house. For example, brushing ones hand along some cloth is very loud in ultrasound, so is a water faucet.

You use BlueWhale by first making an audio recording, and then playing back the ultrasonic or infrasonic sound in the recording.

A recording is started by pushing the RECORD icon. A red outline will surround the button while the Android device is recording. Push the RECORD icon to stop recording. The recorded sound is automatically saved on the Android SD card. Press the INFRASOUND button to hear the low pitched sounds in the recording with all other sounds filtered out. Press the ULTRASOUND button to hear the high pitched sounds in the recording.

Each time a recording is made, it overwrites the old recording.

The limitation of this software to make sounds available to you is the limitations of Android device, primarily the microphone for low frequencies, and the audio sampling rate for high frequencies. To be more precise, the software will enable you to hear in the near ultrasound and the near infrasound.

BlueWhale was developed on an Evo 4G and it should run well on similar phones. Using BlueWhale to record sounds will use your Android device’s memory, just as any other recording will. BlueWhale is uses quite a bit of processing power, so it may be too slow on earlier generations of phones. Please try out BlueWhale with a recording/playback during the first 15 minutes after your download to be sure it is working well on your phone. It is easy to return an application within 15 minutes after purchase.

The program uses the new Google licensing standard. In theory this means the program can be copied to an SD card, freeing up internal memory in the Android, although I haven’t tried it.
