* ABOUT THE WORK *
The Immediate Data of Consciousness analyzes the question of our relationship to the world. The whole book is based on the distinction between simultaneity and succession. According to Bergson, it is necessary to distinguish on the one hand the object which occupies a space among the other objects; that we grasp as a body with clearly discernable edges. And on the other hand, the subject, which exists through his states of consciousness, which can be discerned only abstractly. Psychological states are expressed only through a development that unfolds continuously throughout life. This leads Bergson to affirm that two psychological experiences can not be identical since they proceed from different histories.
Where does it come from when our states of consciousness appear to us as distinct from each other? Why do we represent anger, for example, as an emotion with a defined outline that varies in intensity according to the situations and individuals who experience it?
These illusions arise from a confusion between time and space. We think time in terms of space according to Bergson. The particular movement is thought of as a sequence of points that follow each other along a line. But such a perception of movement is in contradiction with experience itself. The paradoxes of the Éléates illustrate well the impossibility of reducing the movement to this succession of juxtaposed points.
Thus, having shown that psychological states can not be reduced to a list of distinct emotions whose intensity varies; Bergson attacks our understanding of time. He distinguishes the mathematical time, symbolized by the clock that beats the seconds successively; of the conscious duration that unfolds. And each moment exists only in its interpenetration with those who precede it and those who follow it, a moment that has no concrete existence as a singular object.
This analysis allows him, in the last chapter, to rest the problem of freedom in a new light. To grasp the essence of freedom, it is necessary to abandon the ambition to define it as something among things. Following this path invariably leads us into determinism. We must apprehend the action within the duration; free action is a project that develops, that unfolds itself in this duration of which we can only define moments by abstraction, once the act is already realized.
