Yellow Book of Islamic Boarding Schools

Kitab kuning, in Islamic religious education, refers to traditional books that contain Islamic studies (diraasah al-Islamiyyah) which are taught at Islamic Boarding Schools, starting from fiqh, aqeedah, akhlaq / tasawuf, Arabic grammar (` nahwu science and `science sharf), hadith, interpretations, 'ulumul qur'aan, to social and social sciences (mu`amalah).

It is also known as a bald book because it does not have a charity (fathah, kasrah, dhammah, breadfruit), unlike the Qur'an. Therefore, to be able to read the yellow book and the literal meaning of sentences per sentence so that it can be understood comprehensively, it takes a relatively long study time

Most of the texts of the post-Khulafaa al-Rashidin scholars were written in Arabic without charity, unlike the Qur'an in general. Due to the purpose of giving al-Quran to the Al-Quran more to help for non-Arabs and uniformity. Whereas for people who master Arabic grammar, they can easily read the sentence without the blessing. This is what later in Indonesia became known as the Gundul Book to distinguish it from the book that reads with the charity.

While regarding the mention of the term as Kitab kuning, because the books are indeed yellow, this is because the yellow color is considered more comfortable and easier to read in dim conditions. When lighting is still limited to the past, especially in villages, santri are used to learning at night with minimal lighting. Although lighting is now easy, these books are still partly produced using yellow paper following tradition, although some have been printed on white paper (HVS). Another reason is that the age of paper that has been old which helps make the paper turn yellow and becomes darker naturally, also mentioned when the candle / lamp was not yet bright white and still yellow then the white or yellow paper would still look yellow , so that when the yellow paper used to be more economical, the use of yellow paper can reduce the cost of mass production. Now in the modern era these books have been converted into electronic book files, for example chm or pdf. There is also computer software in the use of these books, namely Maktabah Syamila (Shameela) which also began to be popularly used among the santri of modern Islamic boarding schools.
