For celebrating 100 years of Romanian national reunification, the National Museum of Maps and Old Books and Asociația Identitate Culturală Contemporană present an application which offers the opportunity to explore maps of the Romanian historical regions.
People have been trying to know and represent the world around them from time immemorial: the world they knew, the one they guessed, the one they wanted to know; they have been making drawings, they have been marking down and calculating distances in steps, feet, days, miles, kilometers and in light-years more recently.
Beyond science, knowledge and learning, a map gives us information on borders— natural or artificial, subjective or objective, past or present, imaginary or real, political or economical, and also on their crossing; it suggests the extent to which “fixed” things change, it refers to memory and to future projections.
We invite you to explore the National Museum of Maps and Old Books as if you were recounting memories—related to the places where you spent your childhood, where you travelled, where you would like to go, to the things you have learned or to the things you have read about, to places which it seemed to you that you have forgotten.
The application presents information on famous cartographers and precious maps and it can accompany and guide you during your visit into the museum.
The application is the outcome of the partnership between the National Museum of Maps and Old Books and Asociația Identitate Culturală Contemporană, and it was made possible due to the voluntary effort of the software engineers from Gemini Solutions.
