The Medical Microbiology is a branch of microbiology that deals with the disease-causing (pathogenic) microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa). One differentiates the Human Medical Microbiology (pathogens of man) and the Veterinary Microbiology (pathogens of animals). In addition, according to the taxonomic group of pathogens can be distinguished: Medical Bacteriology, Medical Virology, Medical Mycology (fungi), Medical Parasitology.
The focus is on exploring the structure and physiology of the pathogens (pathogens), the interactions between the pathogens and their hosts, the capture and detection of pathogens (diagnosis) as well as the treatment and prevention of diseases caused by microorganisms.
Because infection of the host with the pathogens is a prerequisite for the manifestation of the disease in question, one speaks of infectious diseases.
