Recalling the sinkholes, families, hopes, the exodus.

Speaking of sinkholes in Italy is not easy or it never was.
No historical subject of the twentieth century has been as controversial and much debated each year, during the celebrations of the Day of Remembrance, the Istrian exodus commemoration, Julian, Dalmatian and the memory of the victims of sinkholes become the object of political contention, if not collision between the parties.

For this reason we thought, not long indeed, whether to accept this opportunity of historical study that is given by the Veneto region about the events that tragically involved, between 1943 and 1947, the Italian who lived in the regions of 'Istria, Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia, and which culminated in the dramatic exodus began February 10, 1947.

We assumed that history, despite his huge load of pain, there must be a need for clarity. Clarity through the study and knowledge of the facts involved it seemed, therefore, the most correct attitude to deal with this reflection that does not pretend to be a rigorous historical research, but the educational and human approach of a fourth class technical institute against a subject we know little and which we have tried to give life and dignity beyond any political pressure and possible bias.

There are three important aspects of our work:
- the geo-political, or the knowledge that these events go the tortuous trail that often marked the border lands throughout history; it comes to regions where ethnic groups and cohabitation intersect and overlap; to this end we collected some maps of the area at various times so you can observe the political and territorial changes succeeded;
- the historical one, namely the incorporation of what happened inside the lacerating fascist period, which was followed by the Second World War and the drafting of the peace treaties, particularly complex for the Istrian region, Julian and Dalmatian. We have highlighted the cultural climate and the mentality of the period, the most traumatic and significant events, which may not be mentioned in the sinkholes or the massacre of Vergarolla;
- the human, that the certainty that these geo-political systems, historical and cultural have spent the lives of hundreds, thousands, of people and families with their references and feelings. We have deliberately avoided speaking of numbers, ignoring the figures uncertain of infoibati and the more defined the refugees to give space to images of faces, objects and testimonies of a drama that was individual and collective at the same time.

What is left of the protagonists of the world, swept away by the wind of history?
Small fragments, memories, that we have tried to reconstruct in these tiny memory drops that flow into the great ocean of human existence.
