The Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows was created on February 14, 2009 by the Excellency Diocesan Bishop of Caraguatatuba Dom Antônio Carlos Altieri. The first parish priest was appointed Frei Mauricio José Pinheiro and parish vicar Fr. Inocêncio Xavier.

On September 20, 2010, our late Father Frei Mauricio died and Dom Altieri appointed and inaugurated the new parish priest Father Innocent Xavier on October 3, 2010. In February 2011 Father Agnaldo and the seminarian Diego.

Some years passed, between advances and setbacks and the seven communities that compose the Parish: Holy Ghost of the Dark River; São Benedito da Praia do Lazaro; São Mateus do Pereque-Mirim Sertão; Santana do Perequê-Mirim Beach; Santa Rita da Enseada; Santo Antônio das Toninhas and the Mother of Our Lady of Pain Itaguá, were strengthened. Today it can be said that this CHURCH is under construction in its broad sense, not only the works of the Mother Church that has a great commission of construction, but especially the construction of the Church of God.

Fr. Xavier, Fr. Agnaldo and the seminarian Diego undertook better pastoral and spiritual care for the various communities in the parish. All communities have Mass celebrations on weekends; in the Matriz Our Lady of Sorrows every Thursday there is Adoration to the Blessed Sacrament with Mass and Blessing of the Blessed Sacrament; on Fridays we have the third of Our Lady of Sorrows followed by mass, on Saturdays Mass at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday Masses at 8:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The Catechesis was reorganized, the Pastoral of the Tithe and the Child were created; are being reorganized the Teams of Liturgy, Coroniers and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. With the support of the seminarian Diego, three groups of young people and one of Adolescent Missionaries were organized within the guidelines of the Pontifical Mission Societies directly linked to the Holy See.

Seeking to intensify the spirituality in our parish is being supported the group of Prayer of the CCR and encouraged the Workshops of Prayer, the Marian and Eucharistic devotion.

The parish organization goes through the CPP - Parish Pastoral Council and the Community Pastoral Councils in the various communities with monthly meetings. Also under study is the creation of the Administrative and Economic Parish Council.

At the beginning of 2011, Archbishop Altieri officiated the celebrations in the church, still under construction and on May 30 of this same year, again with us, Archbishop Altieri held the sacrament of Confirmation for 56 catechized of all the communities of the parish.


The parish community is happy with the progress made in the new Matriz church, which is being developed very efficiently by Father Xavier. The resources for the work of the church come especially from donations made through a bank deposit by the community and mainly by tourists who visit us regularly and follow the progress of the construction. The parish community also organizes monthly events such as lunches, dinners and bingos for construction.
