Surah Maryam is a Makkan surah with 98 verses, named after Hazrat Maryam. It is the nineteenth Surah of the Quran and is of great importance.
Like other Meccan Surahs, Surah Maryam also deals with the matters of the hereafter, the punishments of the evil and the rewards of the good. It compels the people to do good as they will be rewarded with a place in Jannah and all the facilities of the world, however, if they go astray, they will have to face the wrath of Allah and will be thrown in the fires of Hell. This Surah does so by a series of stories of the Prophets. The first section, verses 2–40, comprises of the narrative of the prophet Zakkariya and the birth of his son Hazrat Yahya (a.s) and the story of Hazrat Maryam (a.s) and the birth of her son Hazrat Isa (a.s). The second section, verses 41–65, tells of Hazrat Ibrahim's departure from his family's idol worshipping religion and then continues to mention many other prophets. The third section, verses 66–98, confirms the reality of resurrection and offers depictions of the Day of Judgment alongside depictions of this life.
There's no woman mentioned in the Holy Quran by name except Hazrat Maryam (a.s), whose name appears 34 times in the Quran. This is the only Surah named after a woman.
