With the app "Hurdeless Navigation" you have the opportunity to display your hurdles way for the old town in Heidelberg, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany.

The route planner of the city of Heidelberg is aimed particularly at people with reduced mobility: The app identifies people with disabilities, but also, for example, parents with prams or travelers with suitcases, the best hurdles-free route for them.

Individual preferences for the routing can be selected: How high may a curb be, how wide a sidewalk, so that I can overcome it? Is cobblestone ok for me, or do I need a more even soil surface? Which slope can I easily overcome?

Accordingly, you can customize the soil condition, width of sidewalks, height of curbs and the maximum slope individually for your locomotion in the app.

The app can do even more: The underlying data for the background acting routing algorithm should be constantly improved. With the help of the function "data entry" you can actively get involved and confirm whether a section of the route actually has the designated characteristics. The existing data can be validated by simple clicks and thus help all subsequent users that they find a reliable routing through the Heidelberg Old Town.

Expansion plans are there enough: Further districts of Heidelberg are to be developed and it will be possible in the future not only to validate sections via data entry, but also to be able to make entries via such a section.

Background: The city of Heidelberg has been working together with the Geoinformatics department (GIScience) of the University of Heidelberg and other partners since December 2017 on the development of this route planner.
