About Smt. Kamala Mehta College of Commerce

Versova, originally known as Vesave, is a beach village in Mumbai, located in the suburb of Andheri. The beach faces the Arabian Sea. A large population of Mumbai’s fishing community, “the Kolis”, resides at one end of Versova beach. The modern vibrant and dynamic Versova boasts of diverse communities such as Hindu Kolis, Muslim Kolis, Christians, Parsis, Gujarati, Kathevadis, who pride themselves in being the residents of this “happening” place.

With a view to cater to the educational need, the residents founded The Versova Educational Trust in 1962. The Trust started the Versova Welfare Association High School in 1963 and Vatsalay (K.G. Section) and a primary school thereafter. The school and the Primary section of the Trust are well known in the entire neighborhood.

The educational activities initiated by the Trust were praised by the residents and as many students enrolled in the primary and secondary section, there was constant demand to start the facilities for higher education. In order to fulfill the need of the people, the Trust decided to start a college in the year 1998 and laid the foundation stone of the college building at the hands of Hon. Shri Raj Purohit, the then Minister of Housing of the Government of Maharashtra.

The Commerce wing commenced in the academic year 2001-2002 with an enrollment of 240 students.

Another big leap was taken by the trust, when B.M.S. and B&I courses were also introduced in the year 2003-2004, so that students could have multitude of choices for their academic enhancement.

The Trust also started the Junior College attached to the Degree College in the academic year 2003-2004 with initially only 60 students, which has risen to 414 students during the academic year 2015-2016.

The overall strength of the Junior and Degree College has gone up to 1293 Students during the academic year 2015-2016.
