The Never Ending Night (original title: Endless Night) is a detective novel by Agatha Christie published on October 30, 1967 in the United Kingdom. It is published in 1968 in the United States and in 1969 in France.

Summary:
"In my end is my beginning" are the first words of the book, but also the last ones. The story is told in the first person by the main protagonist, Michael Rogers. This is a young Englishman who has worked in many trades, always seeking more but not too much trouble, and looking for meaning in his life, with all his hopes, dreams and ambitions.

He can not find an answer, at least until he meets Ellie, a wealthy American heiress who wants to escape his suffocating environment. They fall in love and get married. Rudolph Santonix, a famous architect and Michael's friend, built a house for them at Gipsy's Acre, where they moved in with Greta Anderson, Ellie's company lady.

Among the villagers whose mates meet is Esther Lee, an old gypsy who terrifies Ellie by threatening her with a curse if she stays. One day, the young woman does not return from her daily horse riding; we find later his body in the woods.

Writing:
Christie wrote the novel in just six weeks, instead of the usual three to four months. At the age of 77, however, she has no difficulty in telling the story from the point of view of a young man in his twenties. She will explain that "after all, you hear people like him talking all the time".

As in all her novels, Agatha Christie exposes the development of feelings in the soul of the hero and emphasizes the weakness of the human spirit and the impossibility of fighting against destiny.

Title and dedication:
The novel's title comes from William Blake's poem Auguries of Innocence, which agrees with Christie's theme in the novel: a tortured mind that always chooses evil rather than good.

The book is dedicated to Nora Prichard, a member of Christie's family. She told him about a lot called Gipsy's Acre in Wales.
