Nama lengkapnya Kiai Haji Zainuddin Hamidi. Ia lahir di Jakarta, 2 Maret 1952, Zainuddin merupakan anak dari keluarga Betawi asli. Sejak kecil memang sudah nampak mahir berpidato. Udin -nama panggilan keluarganya- suka naik ke atas meja untuk berpidato di depan tamu yang berkunjung ke rumah kakeknya. ‘Kenakalan’ berpidatonya itu tersalurkan ketika mulai masuk Madrasah Tsanawiyah hingga tamat Madrasah Aliyah di Darul Ma’arif, Jakarta. Di sekolah ini ia belajar pidato dalam forum Ta’limul Muhadharah (belajar berpidato).

Kebiasaannya membanyol dan mendongeng terus berkembang. Setiap kali tampil, ia memukau teman-temannya. Kemampuannya itu terus terasah, berbarengan permintaan ceramah yang terus mengalir. Karena ceramahnya sering dihadiri puluhan ribu ummat, maka tak salah kalau pers menjulukinya ‘Da'i Sejuta Umat’. Suami Hj. Kholilah ini semakin dikenal masyarakat ketika ceramahnya mulai memasuki dunia rekaman.

Kasetnya beredar bukan saja di seluruh pelosok TautanNusantara, tapi juga ke beberapa negara Asia. Sejak itu, da’i yang punya hobi mendengarkan lagu-lagu dangdut ini mulai dilirik oleh beberapa stasiun televisi. Bahkan dikontrak oleh sebuah biro perjalanan haji yang bekerjasama dengan televisi swasta bersafari bersama artis ke berbagai daerah yang disebut "Nada dan Dakwah".
