The Thousand and One Nights (Arabic, Alf Layla wa-Layla1) is a famous medieval Arabic-language collection of traditional stories of the Middle East, which uses these framed narrative form. The core of these stories is formed by an old Persian book called Hazar Afsana ( "thousand legends"). The compiler and translator of these folk stories into Arabic is supposedly the storyteller Abu Abd-Allah Muhammad el-Gahshigar, who lived in the ninth century. The main story of Scheherazade, which provides the framework to other stories it seems to have been added in the XIV century.

The Arabic compilation Alf Layla (A Thousand Nights), originated around 850, was probably translated in turn from a previous version Persian call Hazar Afsaneh (Mil legends) but perhaps originated in India. The present name Alf Layla wa-Layla (literally "Thousand and One Nights") seems to have appeared in the Middle Ages and expresses the idea of ​​a transfinite number since 1000 represented conceptual infinity between the Arab mathematical groups.
