football in the country. Organized by Ligue de Football Professionnel since 1945.
Since 1944 the French main championship has often changed the amount of
participants, taking turns between 18 and 20, being the last option considered the
more feasible and currently used. With 38 matches, 19 outings and 19 backwards,
the three worst placed at the end of the clashes are downgraded for
second french division.
