The Novelles for a year are a collection of short stories (about 250) written by Luigi Pirandello between 1884 and 1936.

«Novelle for a year is, together with the stories of Giovanni Verga and Federigo Tozzi, one of the highest results of Italian fiction after Unity. Moreover: together with Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, to which in some respects he is inspired (in the temporal theme and with the intention of representing realistically the human comedy), it is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of Italian novelty of all time. »
(Luperini-Cataldi-Marchiani-Marchese, Writing and interpretation, Vol.3 Tomo II, The age of imperialism: the avant-gardes (1903-1925), Palumbo Editore, Palermo 1998 ,, p.218)

The first and last novel
------------------------------------------
The novellistica production accompanies the whole life of the author, from his adolescence to the end of his life, and is more intense in the first fifteen years of the twentieth century:

    the first novel is a Sicilian sketch written in 1884, La Capannetta, published in June 1884 on the Sunday supplement of the Gazzetta del Popolo;
the last novel, Effects of an interrupted dream comes out in the Corriere della Sera in 1936, the day before the death of Pirandello

The first collections until 1922
------------------------------------------------
Pirandello publishes his stories on various newspapers and magazines and collects them in 13 books until 1922 [2]:

    Love without love (1894),
Mockery of death and life and Quand'ero matto (1902),
    Black and white (1904),
    Two-faced Hermaph (1906),
    Far (1908)
    Naked life (1910),
    Terzetti (1912),
    The two masks (1914),
The trap and grass of our garden (1915),
    And tomorrow, Monday ... (1917),
A horse in the moon (1918),
Berecche and the war and the Carnival of the dead (1919).

A single cycle
-----------------------
In 1922 Pirandello decided to design a unique cycle to collect the novels in 24 books of 15 novellas each, with the Florentine publisher Bemporad willing to launch an editorial plan to reorganize the entire corpus of his novellistica production. With the unifying title of Novelle for a year, Pirandello proposes a novel a day, "... for a whole year, without any days, months or seasons, no one has taken his quality" [3], inserting himself in the programmatic furrow of the Decameron and of The Thousand and One Nights, in which a fixed number of stories is told in a precise time, almost like a magic ritual and storytelling

The first 15 volumes
---------------------------
From that year, 1922, until 1937, the year after his death, then fifteen volumes of novellas come out, taking over the Milan publishing house Mondadori in the publication of the last two books, but the cycle remains unfinished for the death of the author.
