COPE (Compassionate Options for Pediatric EMS) is an educational product to guide EMS providers who deal with out-of-hospital pediatric deaths. COPE was developed by the University of Louisville Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery and is based on existing and self-conducted research in consultation with multiple EMS agencies.

The app includes videos depicting common out-of-hospital pediatric death scenarios with helpful pointers and explanations––things to say/do, as well as things not to say/do. It supplies resources EMS providers can share with grieving parents at, and after, the scene. Just as importantly, the app also provides resources to help EMS providers constructively deal with their own emotions during and after the run.

The app is part of the COPE system. Once it is fully functional, the app has been designed to give local EMS agencies the ability to customize it to include contact information for local law enforcement, social services, the coroner, funeral homes and spiritual contacts. This maximizes the ability of EMS providers to connect themselves and families with the resources they need after the death of a child.

The COPE project is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Targeted Issues grant program, Grant No. H34MC26204 for $849,246.
