National Hero award degree is the highest level in Indonesia. [1] This posthumous degree awarded by the Government of Indonesia on the actions that are considered heroic - defined as "real acts to be remembered and imitated of all time for the rest of society." - or "meritorious highly unusual for the interests of the nation." [2] The Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs provides seven criteria that must be owned by an individual, namely: [2]

    Indonesian citizen [a] who have passed away and during his lifetime:
        Has led and armed struggle or political struggles / struggles in other areas reached / grab / maintain / develop the independence and realizing national unity.
        Has given birth to an idea or a great idea that can support the development of the nation.
        Has produced great works that will benefit the public welfare or enhance the dignity of the nation of Indonesia.
    Dedication and accomplishments struggle lasted almost throughout his life (not instant) and beyond the task at hand.
    The struggle of the have a broad range and national impact.
    Has the consistency of the soul and spirit of nationality / nationalism.
    Have good character and high morals.
    Not giving the opponent / enemy in the struggle.
    In his memoirs never committed a disgraceful act that could undermine the struggle.

Selection is executed in four steps and have to get an approval on every level. A proposal was made by the people in the city or county to the mayor or regent, who then must make a request to the governor in the province. The Governor then make recommendations to the Ministry of Social Affairs, which was then forwarded to the President, who was represented by the Council Holds; [2] the council is composed of two academics, two men from a military background, and three people who had previously received an award or title. [ 1] In the final step, the election was made by the President, who was represented by the Council, which bestows the title in a ceremony in the Indonesian capital Jakarta. Heroes of the Revolution was given in 1965 to the ten victims of the September 30th Movement, while former vice president Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed awarded the title Hero in 1988 for their roles in Indonesia's Independence Proclamation read [3] [4] [6]

157 men and 12 women have been appointed as a national hero, the most recent was As'ad Syamsul Arifin in 2016. [7] Heroes came from all parts of the Indonesian archipelago from Aceh in the west to Papua in the east. They come from various ethnic groups, including indigenous Indonesia, ethnic Chinese, and Eurasia. They include the prime minister, the guerrillas, government ministers, soldiers, noblemen, journalists, scholars, and a bishop.
