Its name came from the pugnacious character of the males who took part in the tournament battles in Asia. A popular aquarium fish known as the cockerel.
The first mention of its existence tentatively refer to the year 1800. At that time the inhabitants of Siam drew attention to small fish that differed in aggressive behavior towards each other. The individuals found had short fins and a plain brown hue. Siamese begin to cross the wild Betta and get a fish called Pla Kat which means biting fish.
In 1840, King Siam gave some of his valuable specimens to Dr. Theodor Cantor a physician from Bangkok. After 9 years working on the characteristics of the fish obtained Dr. Cantor named them Macropodus pugnax. However, in 1909 Mr. Charles Tate Regan a British ichthyologist and author of a colossal work on fish classification renamed them Betta splendens noting that the species Macropodus pugnax already exists. There is an assumption that Regan borrowed the name from the existing militant tribe Bettah. Possible translation: Bettah Splendid.
The first Betta was imported to Paris in 1892 and to Germany in 1896. From there went her procession across Europe and already in 1910 this fish was seen in the US. The owner of a valuable cargo was Mr. Frank Locke from San Francisco California. During the selection he received a fish named Betta cambodia. In fact, he was one of the first to receive a new color version of Betta splendens.
In Russia, the appearance of Betta splendens has several versions. One of them is associated with the name of VM Desnitsky. In 1896, he brought exotic species of fish and plants from Singapore but there is no reliable information as to whether the genus Betta splendens was among them. However another amateur aquarian amateur VS Melnikov at the same time was the first in Russia to develop a number of labyrinthine fishes. In his memory a contest was organized for the best fighting fish. Another version says that Betta splendens was brought in by the Frenchman G. Seisel and all descendants of not only Russian but also European fighting fish went from his fish.
