The cockatiel (Brazilian Portuguese) or ratty (European Portuguese) (cockatiel) is a bird belonging to Psittaciformes and Cacatuidae family. Natural Australia, the species was first described in 1792.
The cockatiel is the only member of the genus Nymphicus. He was already considered a crested parrot or small cockatoo; [2] however, recent molecular studies have attributed their own subfamily cockatoo single Nymphicinae. It is therefore now classified as the smallest member of the family Cacatuidae. Cockatiels are native to Australia [3], and favor the Australian wetlands, savannah and bush lands.

History:
In 1838 an English ornithologist John Gould, traveled to Australia with the aim of studying the fauna and perform bird drawings. He was responsible for the worldwide fame of cockatiels because it was the first expert to take cockatiels out of Australia. In 1884, the fame of cockatiels grew, but it was in 1950 that the popularity has increased quite considerably because of harlequin cockatiel emerged through the first color mutation.

Characteristics:
The Cockatiels are generally docile birds that can be kept as a pet. They are very active and emit cries, whistle and many will even imitate sounds they hear frequently (ex .: your name, or some other word that constantly hear). Usually only males can speak or sing, there are some exceptions in which females sing.
The plumage can vary in color according to the changes, most, except the power to "White Man" and "Silver", in each face, an orange paint in the area of the ears. The crest on the top of the head also varies in color and has an average length of 30 cm.
They are hardy birds and well support the climate, since conveniently sheltered from winds and extreme cold. With a balanced diet and proper care can live up to 25 years. Food is one of the most important issues for the welfare of the bird and should be considered taking into account the space that the bird has to exercise and due to the weather. Except for some restrictions, such as avocado, lettuce, tomato and lumps (fruit) in general, fruits and vegetables can enter the diet of birds, but should be offered sparingly because of exaggeration can cause diarrhea or obese, green vegetables dark they are highly indicated and can be offered constantly.
For birds that are unable to do exercises should be avoided include in the diet foods high in fat such as sunflower seed. For this animal can eat sunflower seed or linseed, for example, he would need to fly many kilometers to spend the contained energy.
Presently there may be noted the growth of the bird as a pet for his loving character, but should be a continuous concern for the care of it, particularly when they live loose, since, unfortunately, there is not yet a significant number of professionals care of the species.
With this growth it is possible to realize the increase in pet shops that offer, although in small numbers, "playgrounds", toys and other items to distract the bird.
