Sabia: "Turdus" is a genus of birds in the Turdidae family, which includes 66 species of blackbirds, thrushes, caraxués and thrushes medium and large, characterized by their rounded and long heads pointed wings, and usually possess a melodious song. The distinction between blackbirds and thrushes is not based on biological data and is purely cultural and linguistic, ranging from language to language.
In Linnaeus's classification, the birds of the genus Turdus were the basis for the creation of the Turdidae family, which were gender type. However, in the early 1990s, based on advanced techniques of molecular biology that mediate DNA hybridization, the taxonomy of Sibley-Ahlquist proposed to include this group in the Muscicapidae family, transforming the old Turdidae family in the subfamily Turdinae. However, the reliability of the methodology used and the relevance of the results is challenged by several experts in bird watching, and some newer classifications, as proposed by James Clements, the Turdidae family is restored.
The group has a wide geographical distribution and occurs in Africa, most of the Atlantic Islands, Caribbean, Americas and all of Eurasia, including Japan and the Philippines. Gender Turdus is, in general, absent from the Australasia region, where only occur blackbird-black, introduced in Australia and New Zealand, and many subspecies of T. poliocephalus, inhabiting New Guinea and surrounding islands.
The Turdus are birds that are well adapted to various habitats, from the steppes of Siberia to the Amazon rainforest. They prefer wooded areas and can successfully occupy urban environments. They have omnivorous feeding.
