TLC3DCap is used as a data collector for 3D lasers which have no internal memory. In addition to collecting all laser measurements, the application has been designed to carry out specific surveys in a simple manner. The user is guided through a set of screens to ensure that a successful survey is carried out.

The application supports 3 different types of surveys:
- 3D Face profiling – this is used extensively to improve blasting in open cast mining operations by effectively determining the position of front row boreholes. This ensures minimum flyrock accidents and improves fragmentation results. The user is guided through a wizard in which the left and right markers are surveyed to identify the area of operation. Different types of observations may be collected: crest definition, toe definition, face data, bench data, floor data, geological features data and borehole collar positions
- Muckpile (volumetric survey) – this is used to determine volumes of stock piles. The application allows for positioning of the laser instrument at different locations around the stockpile and combines all measurements using a resection technique to calculate world coordinates (xyz)
- Bench survey – this is used to determine actual borehole collar coordinates and is essential in studies where the user needs to identify deviations between blast design parameters and actual drilled data

The application does not carry out any detailed analysis of data. It’s function is to collect data and store it for subsequent analysis.
The output of the survey is a text file with all measurements. This file can be imported by most CAD packages to create 3D surfaces. The output also exports directly to Winprof (a TLC 3d face profiling analysis application) for face profiling analysis.
