"Halo Ziemia!" Is a therapeutic urban game intended for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This innovative project is a response to the therapeutic needs of the so-called high-functioning children and adolescents with ASD, in which it is extremely important to achieve the greatest possible degree of independence in life. Hence the need to practice practical skills useful in everyday functioning, exposure to social impacts and learning flexibility.
Few people are aware that the problem of autism affects up to 1.5-3% of the population of highly developed countries. Despite the facilities in the education system, the hardships of high-priority children's care rest largely on parents or guardians, as well as on private institutions. It should be emphasized that only systematic, multidirectional therapy gives children and adolescents with ASD a chance for normal functioning in society. And in the case of high-functioning children, for whom our game is primarily intended, this opportunity is definitely greater.
Urban games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment. They allow for the gamification of visiting new cities, discovering lesser-known places in their own cities, or even supporting interesting history lessons. Their therapeutic potential is also worth noticing. In the case of people with autism spectrum disorders, they can be used to encourage young people to go beyond the proverbial "four walls" of their home and use what the city and its people have to offer. At the same time, the application for Android smartphones makes sure that the child did not go beyond the planned area for the task, did not miss the bus stop during the bus ride and eventually reached the destination. In a situation when the slopes off the route or miss a stop - will support, prompting the way.
What is particularly important is the independence of children in the implementation of tasks planned in the game. Thanks to the smartphone on which the application will be installed, they will have a permanent preview to describe the next steps of the task, the mentioned directions for access or arrival to the task site, and you gain the opportunity to check where your child is currently located.
The game "Halo Earth!" Is addressed mainly to children from 10 to 16 years old, but older children can also use it successfully. In turn, younger children can use it to train activities carried out at home: from preparing a sandwich to segregating the laundry. An important element of it is acquiring skills related to planning complex, multi-step activities.
Tasks are part of a story in which clumsy aliens ask for help in performing their daily activities. They reward the player with points and prizes for help. The members of this cosmic family introduce in a funny way to subsequent tasks, justifying what they need. Because how can they know that pizza is not ordered by post, and you eat it together at the table. "Halo Ziemia!" Was created thanks to the cooperation of scientists from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, employees of the Association for Assisting People with the Asperger Syndrome "ASPI" in Bydgoszcz and the "Neurodio" company, which prepared the application for mobile devices. The team is headed by dr hab. Jacek Matulewski. The tasks were prepared by Jacek Matulewski, Barbara Golasik (educator) and Katarzyna Matulewska (psychologist), and verified by prof. Ewa Pisula, psychologist at the University of Warsaw.
