The term campursari in the world of Indonesian national music refers to a mixture (crossover) of several contemporary Indonesian music genres. The name campursari is taken from the actual Javanese language. Campursari music in the central to eastern Java region is specifically related to the modification of gamelan instruments so that it can be combined with western musical instruments, or vice versa. In reality, these 'foreign' instruments are 'submissive' to the standard of music favored by the local community: Javanese style and music.

Campursari was first popularized by Manthous by inserting keyboards into gamelan orchestration around the end of the 1980s through the "Maju Lancar" gamelan group. Then the new elements quickly included Javanese style (keroncong) and finally dangdut. In the decade of the 2000s, there were known forms of campursari which were a mixture of gamelan and keroncong (eg Kena Goda from Nurhana), a mixture of gamelan and dangdut, and a mixture of keroncong and dangdut (congdut, popular from Didi Kempot's songs). Although the development of Campursari has been widely criticized by supporters of the purity of these musical genres, all parties agree that Campursari revitalizes traditional music in the territory of Java.
