The National Commission of Free Textbooks (CONALITEG) is a decentralized public sector sectorized to the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) of Mexico whose objective is to provide free books to students of basic education enrolled in the national education system.
It was created on February 12, 1959, by decree of the then president of Mexico Adolfo López Mateos, and was Secretary of Public Education Jaime Torres Bodet. He gave his first copies in 1960, with the text that corresponded to the first to fifth courses primary grade; the sixth grade was delivered a year later. Its first president was Martín Luis Guzmán, and its general secretary, Miguel Ángel Menéndez Reyes. After the administrative reform of President José López Portillo, in 1980, the Commission became a decentralized public body, and then its leader became director, instead of president.

In 1962, for the cover of the books the work of Jorge González CamarenaLa Patria was used, which would become an icon of educational books. In 1966, he published his first print in braille. For 1982, he created his series of monographs of the states of the Republic.

As of the date of this article, he publishes and publishes textbooks for pre-school, primary, secondary, telesecundaria, indigenous (42 languages), Braille and Macrotipo with an approximate print of 25 million copies. Given that it requires covering an offer of more than 200 million, the rest is obtained under tender to private companies.
