Suite à de nombreux naufrages, l'Angleterre décide en 1714 de créer un bureau des longitudes (Board of longitude) qui propose une récompense à qui saura trouver un moyen de se localiser sur terre et sur mer.
Le problème est très complexe et les navigateurs continuent à utiliser sextants et autres astrolabes pour se repérer en mer. La télégraphie sans fil à la fin du XIXe siècle et plus récemment le système GPS avec son cortège de satellites, apportent enfin une réponse précise à ce probléme.
Chaque point de la surface de la Terre est repérée par deux angles exprimés en degrés :
Latitude : angle qui varie de 90°S (Sud) à 0° pour les points situés sous l'équateur puis de 0° à 90°N (Nord) pour les point situés au dessus de l'équateur.
Longitude : angle qui varie de 180°O (Ouest) à 0° (méridien de référence appelé méridien de Greenwich) et de 0° à 180° E (Est).

Cliquer sur la Terre puis faire pivoter.
