Pantun is one type of old poetry that is very widely known in Nusantara languages. Pantun comes from the patuntun word in the Minangkabau language which means "guide". In Javanese, for example, known as parikan, in Sundanese it is known as papambar, and in the Batak language it is known as umpasa (read: uppasa). Normally the pantun consists of four lines (or four lines if written), each line consists of 8-12 syllables, ending with a-b-a-b and a-a-a-a (not a-a-b-b, or a-b-b-a). Pantun was originally an oral literature but now there are also written rhymes.

All forms of pantun consist of two parts: sampiran and fill. The attachment is the first two lines, often related to nature (characterizing the supporting agrarian culture of the community), and usually has no connection with the second part which conveys a purpose other than to deliver rhymes / poems. The last two lines are contents, which are the goals of the pantun.

Pantun characteristics

- Poetry aa-aa or ab-ab.
- Consists of eight to twelve syllables.
- One pantun consists of four lines or arrays.
- Pantun consists of sampiran and contents.
- Each sampiran and contents in the first row, the first word uppercase or uppercase. In the second row, the first word is lowercase.

Pantun example

Pandan Island is far in the middle
Behind the two goose islands
My body was broken in the cage of the land
I remember the light of your eyes

If you like to borrow
Must return on time
Even though I'm silent
But I know your behavior
