In 1997, Andika (keyboard) formed the Topi music group by inviting her classmates at SMU 2 Bandung, Uki (guitar), Afrian (guitar), and playing partners, Abel (bass) and Ari (drums). Uki also invites his middle school friend Ariel to fill the vocal position. With a formation like that, they started performing and playing alternative Brits music. Then Ari resigned and Topi broke up without a definite cause.

Andika regained Topi's personnel in 2000. But this time, the position of the drum was held by Reza. To give the color of music that is more mature and more melodic, then invited Lukman, Indra's brother's friend, who eventually became the main guitarist (lead guitar). After forming with a formation of six people, they also took the name Peterpan. September 1, 2000, Peterpan was officially formed. Peterpan's name was taken because Andika idolized the fantasy character "Peter Pan". But Ariel's name Peterpan was taken from the name of a satay stall on the side of the road. The short story is, Andika is on her way from Jakarta to Bandung with her mother, Andika decides to take a break first and stop at a satay stall to eat. The name of the satay stall is Peterpan. Until then Andika proposed the name to be the name of his music group.

Peterpan's professional journey began in 2001 by going from cafes to cafes in Bandung. They played at Kafe O'Hara and Sapu Lidi by bringing top 40 songs, as well as alternative rock such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, U2, Creed, etc. When at the cafe Sweep Lidi was their potential seen by Noey, a Java Jive base who was looking for a music group to fill compilation albums. From the song sent by Peterpan manager, Budi Soeratman for the demo, namely "Mimpi Yang Sempurna", "Kita Tertawa" and "Taman Langit", the song "Mimpi yang Sempurna" was chosen to be included in the 2002 2002 Malam compilation album released in July 2002. Unexpectedly the song became the champion of this album and boosted sales to above 150,000 copies.

Peterpan debuted in Indonesian music scene in 2002 after launching a single titled "Dream of the Perfect" and his first appearance on the first anniversary of Trans TV on December 15, 2002.
