Dewa 19 is a music group formed in 1986 in Surabaya, Indonesia. This group has experienced several personnel changes and its last formation before being disbanded in 2011 was Ahmad Dhani (keyboardist), Andra Junaidi (guitar), Once Mekel (main vocal), Yuke Sampurna (bass) and Agung Yudha (drum). After dominating the festival stages at the end of the 1980s, Dewa 19 then moved to Jakarta and released his first album in 1992 under the label Team Records. [1]

1986–1991: Beginning of formation

Ahmad Dhani is one of the founders of Dewa 19 music group.
Dewa was first formed in 1986 by four students of Surabaya Public Middle School 6. Dewa's name is an acronym for the names of the four of them: Dhani Ahmad (keyboard, vocals), Erwin Prasetya (bass), Wawan Juniarso (drums) and Andra Junaidi (guitar). They have a training camp at Wawan's house on Jalan Darmawangsa in South No. 7, which is located in the Airlangga University complex. [1] [12]

The god who originally appeared with more pop music, then changed course to jazz after Erwin introduced jazz to this group. Wawan who was a big fan of rock music then decided to leave in 1988 and joined the Outsider, which included members of Ari Lasso. [12] Wawan's position was later replaced by Salman and the name Dewa was changed to Down Beat, which was taken from the name of the jazz magazine published by the United States. In the area of ​​East Java and its surroundings, the name Down Beat at that time was quite famous, especially after successfully dominating the festival stage. Call it the Youth Jazz Festival in East Java, the first winner of the High School Band Festival '90 or the second winner of the Super Fiesta Music Needle. [1]

When the name Slank fluttered, Wawan was again called to revive Dewa, by inviting Ari Lasso. The name Down Beat was changed to Dewa 19, because at that time the average age of personnel was 19 years. [12] This time, Dewa 19 was present by mixing a variety of music into one: pop, rock, even jazz, thus giving birth to a new alternative for the repertoire of Indonesian music at that time. [1]

One of Wawan's classmates, Aaron turned out to be interested in the concept and offered an investment of Rp. 10 million to capitalize on his friends making master recordings.
