The Don Bosco Bulletin is a Quarterly Publication from the Salesians of Don Bosco in Ethiopia. As the Academic year begins in Ethiopia from September, the first issue of the year usually comes out in September which covers the period from May to August. The second issue is usually around the feast of Don Bosco in January which will cover the months from September to December. The third issue is around the Feast of Mary Help of Christians in May which will have coverage of all the four preceding months from January to April. The Bulletin now widely appreciated by people as there are very few quality Catholic magazines in the country. As per the suggestion of some of the readers, an Amharic section too has been introduced in the bulletin to reach a wider public.
The bulletin usually carries a theme for each issue and all the articles in the magazine are adapted to the general theme of the Bulletin. The theme is taken from directives of the Salesian Congregation or from the timely events of the Church. Every issue of the Bulletin contains the monthly letter of the Rector Major and a guiding note from the Superior of the AET Province of Ethiopia. The articles are generally contributed by the confreres of the Ethiopian province which comprise of a majority of local confreres and a good number of foreign confreres as well, hailing from over 8 nationalities. Every issue of the bulletin also contains a guest review which is often written by a non-salesian, chosen by the editor of the Salesian Bulletin.
The magazine also has three columns of news, which are of the Salesian world (global), Salesian world (local) and Catholic News from the world. It also has corners for jokes, tips and bits, and inspiring anecdotes. The last page of the magazine is always the students’ corner which is dedicated for the young salesians in formation, especially students of philosophy as they are encouraged to write on various issues. The finance for the printing is always obtained by selling of the pages of the magazine. On an average we give space for more than 5 ads in each issue and the budget for the printing is obtained from these advertisements in the magazine. The Salesian Bulletin is totally under the patronage of the Social Communication department of AET province.
There is also a monthly newsletter from the province which is named as ‘AET Rapport’ which is aimed at the internal communication in the province. This newsletter contains basically a message from the Superior of the Province, special communication from the superior, important appointments of the month, birthdays and anniversaries of confreres, and on the last page a photo chronicle of the month.
