Kotak was formed on September 27, 2004 during the 2004 program The Dream Band, Box was born in one of Kahitna's personnel, Doddy, who acted as producer. At that time, Doddy auditioned to form a new band format in Indonesia consisting of a drummer, guitarist, bassist and vocalist.

The audition is getting a response from teenage musicians who want to try their luck in the music industry. A total of 400 vocalists, 170 bassists, hundreds of guitarists, and hundreds of drummers stuffed the auditions. After auditioning with various assessment formats, 2 vocalists, 2 bassists, 3 guitarists and 2 drummers were selected. The selected young musician was then mixed again into two bands, namely Kotak, which has four people and "Lima" with five people. The box name means four sides and four corners that are united into a box building. It describes four different people but united in one music container. Then they released their first single entitled "Sendiri" on the album "The Dream Band" Delapan ".

First album
The current Kotak band formation is not what it is now. The band group formation was first filled by Cella (guitar), Icez (bass), Pare (vocal), and Posan (drum). They then released the first album titled Kotak under the auspices of the HMR label. The debut songs in the album include "Lost", "Flying (Khayal)", "You Choose Him", "Peace of Heart" and "When You're Far".

Second Album and Substitution of Personnel
At the end of 2006, Pare decided to leave the band. "I just want to be behind the scenes. It's hard for me to always be frontman in front. But I won't leave the box just like that. Whenever I am asked for help, I will definitely help Box, for example to make songs, "said Pare, at that time. Although heavy, but after fully understanding the reason for the third Pare, the other box gave up Pare to get out [1]. The vacant position was replaced by Tantri. According to Tantri, he was awkward when he first joined the band. "The vocal character of Pare has been attached to the box, I was confused about wanting to continue the Pare character or myself. However, after playing together and practicing together, I decided to use my own character," he said.

Some time later, Icez left the band due to joining The Rock for the promo album Master Mister Ahmad Dhani I. After Icez, the bass position was filled with new personnel named Nissa Hamzah who has now joined Omelette. The Box Band manager turned out to be interested in Chua's bass playing and recruited him to become the bassist of Box [2]. They later released their second album titled Second Box in 2008.

It turned out that the formation of a new band on the second album brought success to Band Kotak to be more fluttering in the Indonesian music industry.
