Padi is a legendary music group from Indonesia whose members consist of Ari (guitar), Fadly (vocals), Yoyo (drums), Rindra (bass), and Piyu (guitar). This music group made their debut in the world of Indonesian music at the end of the 1990s through Sobat's single on an indie compilation album, and was considered to bring a new color in the world of Indonesian music. The chosen music path is pop-rock-creative. At the beginning of its appearance, Padi's musical style was often compared to U2 and Radiohead.

The main motor of this group is Piyu, who performs a central function as a music composer and lyrics to almost all songs. But Padi's main strength lies in mastering the instruments of its personnel who have the character and technical abilities far above the average musicians in various Indonesian bands. Rice personnel are filled by champions of various musical instrument championships. After being in a vacuum, Piyu chose to develop his own creativity, while other personnel formed Musikimia, which underwent an independent music process.

Early formed

Formed April 8, 1997, this group is a forum for the creativity of five students of Airlangga University, Surabaya. Originally named 'Soda', it was later changed to 'Rice' ("Food rice is difficult for people," said one person). This name was chosen because it was "very down to earth". Furthermore, they not only took their philosophy, the more they ducked, but also saw the function that symbolized well-being.

Starting from playing music from one stage to another, the group was finally contracted to enter the recording world.

Padi's albums were quite successful in penetrating the Indonesian music market. Some observers conclude that the dynamic and more complex rice music arrangement of the average songs by the same Indonesian band are one of the causes of that success. At the beginning of its appearance in 1998 the repertoire of the Indonesian band was dominated by songs with simple arrangements with medium tempo tend to be slow.

Another characteristic of the Indonesian music group at that time was that the keyboard instruments were quite dominant in leading bands.
