Beberapa anak kecil sedang membicarakan cita-cita mereka setelah dewasa nanti. Ketika tiba giliran Jimmy, ia tidak menyebutkan profesi yang lebih umum seperti dokter, pengacara, polisi, atau petugas pemadam kebakaran. Jimmy hanya bercita-cita untuk menjadi seorang dermawan. Ketika teman-temannya menyuruhnya menjelaskan alasannya, Jimmy menjawab, "Karena kudengar orang seperti ini punya banyak uang."

Pernyataan Jimmy tersebut tidak sepenuhnya benar. Di dalam kamus, dermawan didefinisikan sebagai "seseorang yang mengasihi dan suka memikirkan kepentingan sesamanya". Seseorang tidak langsung menjadi dermawan hanya karena ia memiliki banyak uang. Pada kenyataannya, seorang miskin yang "mengasihi dan memikirkan kepentingan sesamanya", terlepas dari kemampuannya yang terbatas, lebih pantas disebut seorang dermawan daripada orang yang sangat kaya namun kikir yang memberi dengan terpaksa -- walau jumlah yang disumbangkannya besar.

Bahkan Rasul Paulus mendorong orang-orang yang suka mengambil haak orang lain agar dapat menjadi pemberi. Rasul Paulus berkata demikian, "Orang yang mencuri, janganlah ia mencuri lagi, tetapi baiklah ia bekerja keras ... supaya ia dapat membagikan sesuatu kepada orang yang berkekurangan" (Efesus 4:28).Pemberian seperti inilah yang dapat membawa sukacita kepada si pemberi (Amsal 14:21).
