The Iron Throne is the seat of the power of the King of the Seven Kingdoms. Only the King's Hand may sit on it during the king's absence. The throne itself is cold and hard, with many sharp edges. It is forged with the swords of surrendered enemies. It took 59 days and the fire of Balerion the Black Terror to unite the thousand swords in the form of a throne. The swords are still sharp and those who sit on the throne will cut themselves if they are not careful.

Game of Thrones ( GOT ) is a fantasy novel written by American author George R. R. Martin in 1996 and winner of the Locus award for best fantasy novel in 1997.

Fifteen years before the novel, the Seven Kingdoms were separated by a civil war, known alternatively as Robert's Rebellion or the Usurper's War. Prince Rhaegar Targaryen kidnapped Lyanna Stark, arousing the anger of his family and his fiancé, Robert Baratheon (the ringleader of the rebellion against the King). The Mad King, Aerys Targaryen, executed Lyanna's father and his older brother Brandon when they tried to rescue her. Lyanna's second brother, Eddard Stark, joined his youthful friends, Robert Baratheon and Jon Arryn in declaring war against the Targaryen, securing the loyalty of the Tully house and the Arryn house through a chain of dynastic marriages (Lord Eddard with Catelyn Tully, former fiancée of his brother Brandon, and Lord Arryn with Lysa Tully). The Martell House continued to support the King, but the Lannister House and the Tyrell House apologized for the insults against their houses made by the King. The civil war reached its climax with the Battle of the Trident, in which Prince Rhaegar was assassinated by Robert Baratheon. The Lannisters finally agreed to support King Aerys, but then they turned brutally against him, looting the capital King's Landing. Jaime Lannister of the Royal Guard murdered King Aerys and the Lannister House swore allegiance to Robert Baratheon. The Martell and the rest of the faithful to King Aerys surrendered and Robert was declared King of the Seven Kingdoms. Unfortunately, during the war, Lyanna Stark died, apparently of illness; Robert Baratheon, instead, married Cersei Lannister to consolidate the alliance. Despite Robert's victory, the Mad King's youngest son and daughter (Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen) were carried across the sea by faithful servants. After the war Martell House chose the path of isolation, since the sister of the princess of Dorne, Elia Martell (the wife of Prince Rhaegar) and her young children were killed by Gregor Mountain Clegane during the assault on the capital.

Six years later, King Robert decisively tackled the Greyjoy Ballon rebellion of the Iron Islands. Balon's two eldest sons were killed, while his youngest son, Theon Greyjoy, was given to Eddard Stark as a pupil (politically correct version of "hostage").
