The 2013 curriculum is designed to strengthen students' competencies in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes as a whole. The process of achieving this through learning a number of subjects is arranged as a unit that supports each other in the enlightenment of these competencies. When at the elementary / MI level, all subjects are combined into one and presented in the form of themes, so that at the junior high school / MTs level learning has begun to be divided into subjects.

As the transition to secondary education, this separation has not yet been fully implemented for junior high / MTs students. Materials from the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth and Space Sciences still need to be presented as a whole in natural science subjects. This is intended to provide complete insight for middle school / MTs students about the basic principles that govern the universe and all its contents.

This Class IX SMP / MTs IPA book is compiled with the above thoughts. The field of Biology is used as a platform for discussing other fields of science. Living things are used as objects to explain the basic principles that govern nature such as natural objects and their interactions, energy and balance, etc. Through the discussion of using various fields of science in the natural science family, a complete understanding of the nature that is inhabited along with natural objects found around it can be mastered by junior high school students.

As one of the science groups used to measure the progress of education in a country, the understanding of a country's students towards science is routinely compared as done through the TIMSS (The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) and PISA (Program for International Student Assessment). Through international assessments like this we can find out the quality of science learning compared to other countries. The science material in the 2013 curriculum has been adapted to the demands for mastering science material according to TIMSS and PISA.

In accordance with the 2013 Curriculum concept, this book is compiled in reference to integrated and intact science learning, so that every knowledge that is taught, learning must continue to make students skilled in presenting the knowledge that they master concretely and abstractly, and behaving as beings who are grateful for the grace of the universe which is given to him through responsible use.

This book outlines the minimum effort students must make to achieve the expected competencies. In accordance with the approach used in the 2013 Curriculum, students are encouraged to find other learning resources available and widely spread around them. The role of the teacher is very important to improve and adjust the absorption of students with the availability of activities in this book. Teachers can enrich it with creations in the form of other activities that are appropriate and relevant that are sourced from the social and natural environment.
