The Way of the Cross or Via Crúcis (from the Latin Way of the Cross, which means "Way of the Cross") corresponds to the journey that was carried by Jesus carrying the cross from Praetorium to Calvary.

The practice of the Way of the Cross consists of religious devotional practice in which the faithful travel in their own way and through their own prayers, the journey of Jesus carrying the Cross from the Praetorium of Pontius Pilate to Mount Calvary, meditating simultaneously on the Passion of Christ . This exercise, which was very usual at Lent, dates back to the time of the Crusades (from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries): the faithful who traveled in the Holy Land to the sacred places of the Passion of Christ wanted to reproduce in the West , the pilgrimage along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. The number of seasons, steps, or stages of this trek was gradually defined, reaching the current form of fourteen seasons in the sixteenth century. The exercise of the Way of the Cross has been highly recommended by the Supreme Pontiffs of the Catholic Church as it provides a fruitful meditation on the passion and death of Jesus Christ.

It is possible to obtain plenary indulgence by praying the Way of the Cross according to custom, which consists in doing the readings, prayers and meditations of each Station before the respective picture, or cross, placed habitually along the walls of the churches.
