Chikungunya is an illness caused by a virus that spreads through mosquito bites. It’s first described during an outbreak in southern Tanzania in 1952. Outbreaks have occurred in countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Indian and Pacific Oceans, It is an RNA virus that belongs to the alphavirus genus of the family Togaviridae. The name “chikungunya” derives from a word in the Kimakonde language, meaning “to become contorted”, and describes the stooped appearance of sufferers with joint pain. The most common symptoms of chikungunya virus infection are fever and joint pain. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash. There is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat chikungunya virus infection. The disease does not usually kill. Most people will feel better within a week, though some are never relieved of the debilitating joint pain. The best thing patients can do is rest, drink fluids and take pain-relieving and fever-reducing medicine
