QuitBuddy is the first mobile phone delivered, GPS triggered, just-in-time adaptive intervention (JITAI) for smoking relapse prevention. QuitBuddy automatically provides evidence-based treatment prompts in a real-time, preemptive manner, upon approach of personalized high-risk locations.
Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide, and the need for new and improved treatment approaches is further highlighted by the fact that only 5% of smokers who make a quit attempt can maintain abstinence for at least one year. In an effort to reduce relapse risk we developed and are evaluating QuitBuddy, which meets the dynamic needs of patients engaged in a quit attempt. This intervention has great promise for increasing access to smoking cessation/relapse prevention services, thereby benefiting public health.
QuitBuddy was conceptualized by Dr. Bryan Heckman of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) to make it easier for smokers to quit and stay quit. Please feel free to contact Dr. Heckman via email (heckmanb@musc.edu) if you have any questions about QuitBuddy.
