The Neocatechumenal Way is a Catholic organization1. According to the statutes approved by the Holy See, 2 is presented as a post-baptismal itinerary of Catholic formation or foundation of goods espirituales.3 Its members are popularly known by the name "kikos" 4 in Spain due to the name of its initiator, the secular Kiko Arguello, 5 who along with Carmen Hernandez and Italian priest Mario Pezzi formed the Responsible Team Internacional.6

The Neocatechumenal Way was initiated in the 1960s in the neighborhood of Palomeras, on the outskirts of Madrid, and has spread worldwide. In mid-2013 was present in at least 120 countries, 7 with 102 seminars Redemptoris Mater.8 9 was estimated to have more than one million members, of which three hundred thousand are in Spain.10

At first, the statutes were approved on June 29, 2002, on a temporary basis for five years ad experimentum by Pope John Paul II. Later, in early 2008, the decree in which the statutes were finalized, 11 and 13 June the same year was issued, Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, presented the decree of definitive approval Statutes of the Neocatechumenal Way along with its final text, as belonging to the Catholic Church.

In the early 60s, Francisco José Gómez Argüello (Kiko Arguello) had, by his own account, a vision of the Virgin maria12 that would have asked "to make communities like the Holy Family of Nazareth".

He devoted himself to the evangelization of the poor areas of Palomeras Altas, where were poor people, who lived in shanties on the outskirts of Madrid mostly. There he met Carmen Hernandez and from 1964 to 1967 worked together, living among homeless and prostitutes. In addition to direct evangelization and care of these people, meditating the Bible and liturgy.

The Archbishop of Madrid, Mons. Casimiro Morcillo invited them to work in some parishes of the city and in Zamora, in the Parish of San Frontis, where catechesis began in 1967. In this parish is present the oldest community neocatecumenal of the world. The experience served to deepen the value of baptism and the maturation of faith in people who received their preaching.

In 1968 they were invited to also work in Rome by Monsignor Dino Torreggiani. They moved to the suburbs of the Latin Borghetto and began its chats in the parish Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament and the Canadian martyrs, in Nomentano. Hence the charisma was expanding to other parts of the world.

In April 1970, in Majadahonda, Argüello and Hernandez and other leaders and pastors gathered to reflect on the identity of the communities that were arising in the parishes. There the fundamental elements of their methodology and apostolic charisma were defined.

In 1974, after a period of two years of study and review, the Congregation for Divine Worship published in its official journal, a brief note Praeclarum exemplar appreciating works of Neocatecumenales.13 communities in the years that followed, at the request of the same congregation, the name "Neocatechumenal Way" was chosen over other proposed names, ie "Post-Baptismal Catechumenate".

In 1990 Pope John Paul II Archbishop Paul Cordes addressed, responsible in the Curia of the Council of the Laity, one carta14 formal recognition, with a plea to the bishops to assist the Neocatechumenals in his apostolado.15
