Ahmet Kaya was born in 1957 as the fifth child of a family who migrated from Adıyaman to Malatya. His father was a worker in a fabric factory in Sümerbank. She went to elementary school in Malatya. At the age of six, he was introduced to music by his father's gift. In the remainder of his schooling, he started working in a shop selling records and tapes. In 1972, due to his family's lack of livelihood, they emigrated to İstanbul Kocamustafapaşa and had to leave school. She worked as an apprentice in various businesses. During this period, he experienced the difficulties of moving from a small settlement to a big city and getting used to it. In a documentary, he expressed these troubles:

«I was not talking to them; Because I couldn't talk to them. His clothes were different, his speeches were different. I was trying to talk like them. For instance, I went to tailor and started pants like them. I could see the tailor's pants didn't fit on me. It suits me well. There was a girl at our school; everyone has a love, childhood love. One day I went and said: 'I talk to you for five minutes, you're running away ...' He said: I went to such a pain: 'I'll ask you,' I said .. I did not know the meaning of time, so I thought it was a swearing. »
At the age of sixteen he was imprisoned for printing illegal banners. Later on, he joined the activities of the People's Units Association with several friends. During this work he continued playing the binding at various events. She had the chance to meet with Ruhi Su at an event organized by Boğaziçi University and sang the Ruhi Su folk song called Mahsus Mahal. In 1978, he completed his military service in Gallipoli and continued his musical studies in the military orchestra. Upon his return from military service he married Emine Kaya and their daughter Çiğdem was born in 1982.

He suffered from economic difficulties due to unemployment. Meanwhile, his wife left him. In hopes of getting rid of these economic problems, he tried to go to jail by saying "act against the system" in his own words. In 1984, he released his album Ağlama Bebeğim which he produced after a long period of work. He gave a small concert in İstanbul Şan Theater. The year he was released, the album was confiscated, but later censored. In 1985, he signed with his new studio album u ACILARA Tutunmak için (Change Studio). The owner of the studio was Sezer Bağcan, the brother of Selda Bağcan, who was at Metris Military Prison. Gülten Hayaloğlu, the victim of the September 12 coup he met in prison, was contacted by Ahmet Kaya. They got married after the album was released. Gülten Hayaloğlu forwarded the poetry of Nevzat Çelik's Şafak Türküsü to Ahmet Kaya, who was sentenced to death in prison. Thus, the album was made public in 1985 and Şafak Türküsü was released in 1986. He worked with Oğuz Abadan, the arranger in this album and made almost all the compositions himself.
