Sculptures in Progress. Apricena Stone Museum

It is inevitable that the city of Apricena, which gave its name to a stone with which traditionally design works, sculptures, buildings, squares, street furniture, and streets are made, just when it redesigns its main course, should dedicate part of this urban work to contemporary sculptors.
Sculptors who have in their DNA the material (stone, marble, granite and then ceramics, bronze, wood), which have left their marks all over the world, even in large museums such as the Hermitage or exhibited their works in important institutions such as the Milan Triennale.
Sculture in Corso does not want to be a temporary exhibition, but the beginning of a real open-air museum in the center of the city of Apricena. A museum that is a real collective work made possible by the vision of a public administration, by the participation of companies from the place where they extract from the quarries and work with their cutting-edge stone machinery, which they have made available this time of established sculptors such as Giuliano Vangi, Ugo La Pietra, Francesco Granito, Cristian Biasci.
The operation is ambitious, entering a virtuous and ideal circuit of many other cities of the world that integrate art not only in the urban and social fabric, but in the territory and in its material history, inviting artists to create works specifically with the same material that shares the name with the city, as happens for the Carrara marble, the Lecce stone, the Albissola ceramic or the Volterra alabaster.
Not a simple urban park of sculptures (which in itself would already be exceptional to have in a small town like Apricena), not simple sculptures commissioned to important artists (even this sign of an enlarged vision), but site-specific urban works, so unrepeatable, both in terms of location and type of material used.
Each of the four artists has thought of a specific project starting from a single conditioning: the dimensions of the stone block, for all the same, but that each has reinvented in its own way.
From the metamorphic figure of Vangi (Woman who turns) to the archaic houses of La Pietra (From quarries to architecture), from the surreal and imposing Granite feather (Soffioscultura) to the organic and sensual one of Biasci (Chrysalys), to the spectator, in the flowing of its daily passage, it appears not only a beautiful road of new construction (used in everyday trade), but a new way (this never taken for granted or limited in time) to see the collective space, to absorb it in an aesthetic sense and emotional, more integrated with the diversified experiences of reality.
The meaning of naming these works as “sculptures in progress” in a Madrepietra Museum will not only be in locating and specifying even more a territorial and material geography, but also inviting those who live the city every day to take care of these sculptures which are therefore works of art, to treat them as the last comings that however can raise and improve the urban, social and human context, with their silence, with their beauty, with their strength but also their fragility.
Guardians, curators, conservators and spectators of this museum will therefore be the citizens of Apricena and all those who, intrigued and attracted by this long-term novelty, will want to visit it.
