Santa Caterina da Siena è una donna straordinaria, che per la forza del suo spirito e della sua azione ha avuto un ruolo di enorme rilievo nella storia della Chiesa e dell’Europa, anche perché il secolo in cui visse – il quattordicesimo – fu un’epoca travagliata per la vita della Chiesa e dell’intero tessuto sociale in Italia e in Europa.
Nacque a Siena il 25 marzo 1347, dal tintore Jacopo Benincasa e da Lapa di Puccio de’ Piacenti. E’ la 24°, gemella, di 25 fratelli e sorelle. All’età di sette anni ebbe la prima visione di Cristo, con abiti papali, accompagnato dagli apostoli Pietro e Paolo e dall’evangelista Giovanni. L’esperienza segnò la sua vita, tanto che a sette anni fece voto di verginità perpetua; ma la famiglia ne ostacolò la vocazione, finché un giorno il padre la sorprese in preghiera con una colomba aleggiante sul capo.
Ricevette quindi nel 1363 l’abito del Terz’ordine domenicano. La sua vita proseguì nella preghiera e nella penitenza; a venti anni imparò a leggere, ricevette l’anello delle mistiche nozze con Gesù, dettò le prime lettere, ebbe inizio la sua attività caritativa: poveri, malati, carcerati, spesso ripagata da ingratitudine e calunnie. La sua figura iniziò ad attrarre i primi discepoli, chiamati per scherno “caterinati”.
Quando la fama della sua santità si diffuse, fu protagonista di un’intensa attività di consiglio spirituale nei confronti di ogni categoria di persone: nobili e uomini politici, artisti e gente del popolo, persone consacrate, ecclesiastici, compreso il Papa Gregorio XI che in quel periodo risiedeva ad Avignone e che Caterina esortò energicamente ed efficacemente a fare ritorno a Roma.
Caterina soffrì tanto, come molti Santi. Qualcuno pensò addirittura che si dovesse diffidare di lei al punto che, nel 1374, sei anni prima della morte, il capitolo generale dei Domenicani la convocò a Firenze per interrogarla. Le misero accanto un frate dotto ed umile, Raimondo da Capua, futuro Maestro Generale dell’Ordine. Divenuto suo confessore e anche suo “figlio spirituale”, scrisse una prima biografia completa della Santa.
Alla morte di Papa Gregorio XI, il successore Urbano VI fu osteggiato nel collegio dei cardinali che elessero come antipapa Clemente VII, dando inizio allo scisma d’occidente. Caterina esercitò tutta la propria energia per far riconoscere l’autorità di Urbano VI e si consumò nel dolore per la Chiesa divisa, morendo il 29 aprile 1380 all’età di 33 anni. Fu proclamata santa nel 1461 dal papa senese Pio II, patrona d’Italia da Pio XII, dottore della Chiesa Universale da Paolo Vi e patrona d’Europa da Giovanni Paolo II.
