Al-Hussain bin Ali bin Abi Talib (peace be upon him), known as the master of the martyrs and known as Abu Abdullah (4-61 AH), is the third imam of the Shiites. He assumed the command of the Imamate for ten years until his death in the Taf incident on the tenth of Muharram 61 AH by the order of Yazid. He is the second son of Imam Ali (pbuh) and Fatimah al-Zahra, and he is the second tribe of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The Prophet (PBUH) named him Hussain after his birth, and told that he would be killed by a group of his ummah. The Prophet (PBUH) loved Hassan and Hussein (PBUH) dearly, and called others to love them too.
Al-Hussain (PBUH) is considered one of the companions of the garment for whom the verse of purification and praise was revealed. There were many stories about his grandfather (PBUH) on his virtue (PBUH), including: Al-Hassan and Al-Hussein are masters of the youth of the people of Paradise.
In the three decades that followed the death of the Prophet (PBUH), little was mentioned about the biography of Hussein (pbuh). He was a supporter of his father, the Commander of the Faithful (PBUH) when he assumed the caliphate, and participated in that era in all its wars.
And he stood in support of his brother Hassan (pbuh) in reconciliation with Muawiyah. And after his brother Al-Hassan (pbuh) was martyred, he remained committed to peace. Therefore, when his Shiites wrote to him and showed their willingness to support him as their imam, he called them to be patient and wait until the death of Muawiyah.
The reign of the Imamate of Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon him) coincided with the beginnings of the Muawiya government. And based on what was stated in the sources, that Imam Hussein (pbuh) had a position opposing Muawiyah’s rule, from whom he sent a message condemning Muawiyah for the killing of Hajar bin Adi, and he (PBUH) in the course of Muawiyah’s efforts to succeed Yazid denounced that against Mu’awiyah and Abu pledging allegiance to Yazid. In a council attended by Muawiya and others, in it he publicly opposed the pledge of allegiance to Yazid and showed some of Yazid's characteristics that indicate his immorality and indulgence. Among the most important political positions opposing the ruling authority was the sermon delivered by Imam (PBUH) in Mina. In spite of this it was reported that Muawiyah apparently had full respect for Imam Hussain (pbuh) who followed in that the three caliphs.
