Slank was officially established in 1983 in Jakarta, with the initial retainer of Bimbim (drums), Denny BDN (bass), Erwan (vocal), Kiki (guitar) and Bongky (guitar). Previously, Bimbim first formed a band called Cikini Stones Complex (CSC) with high school friends at Cikini College in Jakarta. As soon as CSC broke up, Bimbim invited his cousin Denny BDN, Erwan and Kiki to re-establish a music group that was originally given the name "Red Evil".

Unlike CSC, which often plays The Rolling Stone songs, Red Evil is more courageous to play their own songs and whatever songs they like, even though there are more western songs, especially Van Halen, because Erwan's vocals are similar to David Lee Roth's. Unsatisfied playing with just one guitar, then Bimbim invited Bongky Marcel who was the guitarist "Rese Band" (At that time, you could say Rese Band was a rival of Red Evil). They often performed by playing their own songs and Van Hallen's songs. But because they often played in front of fans of The Rolling Stones, they often played Stones songs too.

Unfortunately, the music that is played can never be similar to the original and their stage action is often called slengean with friends who always join in every Red Evil gig. At the end of the year, they agreed to look for a new name and do it at the Hotel Kartika Chandra - Jakarta bowling alley, precisely at Denny's BDN birthday celebration. At that time, Bimbim proposed to use the Red Eyes name only, but after compromising with all appeals, SLANK's name was chosen which was inspired by friends who often called them slengean boys. So, Slank stands for slengeanan and uses the letter K to make it cooler.
