The South American Cup, currently known as CONMEBOL South American, is a continental competition of South American football clubs, organized by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) since 2002. It is the second most prestigious competition between clubs in the South American continent, inferior only to the Copa Libertadores of America.

In 2002, it replaced the Mercosur and Merconorte Cups, which in turn replaced the Conmebol Cup and the South American Super Cup in 1998 and 1999. The South American Cup resulted from a failed attempt to host a Pan-American Cup, including North and Central American competitors between 2002 and 2008.

The CONMEBOL Cup, played between 1992 and 1999, which was CONMEBOL's third competition at the time, is considered its precursor for the very similar forms of classification for the competition, with the biggest difference being the number of participants, only 16 in the previous competition.

Since its inception in 2002, the champion has qualified to play the South American Cup Win the following year against the Copa Libertadores champion of the same year.

In the 2006 edition Pachuca became the first non-South American club to win a competition organized by CONMEBOL.

The International (2008), Universidad de Chile (2011), São Paulo (2012) and River Plate (2014) were the only undefeated champions in the Cup history; the first with five wins and five draws in ten games, the second with ten wins and two draws in twelve games; the third with five wins and five draws in ten games and the fourth with eight wins and two draws in ten games.

Since 2007, the champion also qualifies to compete the following year in Japan, the Suruga Bank Cup against the champion of the Japanese League Cup of the same year and from the 2010 edition, CONMEBOL included a spot for the Cup champion South America in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores of America.

In November 2011 CONMEBOL and the representatives of the participating confederations of the tournament decided to open another 8 vacancies for the 2012 edition. The countries that until then had only 3 vacancies, counted on 4 representatives from the edition, with the exception of Argentina and Brazil (6 and 8 places respectively). In 2015 and 2016 he had his champion participating in the Supercopa Euroamericana, friendly competition against the champion of the UEFA Europa League.

Starting in 2017, it has undergone a new reformulation. Once played only in the second half, it started to occur throughout the season in parallel with the Copa Libertadores, and 10 teams eliminated from that competition before the round of 16 are transferred to the Copa Sudamericana.
