Mother's Day is celebrated in honor of mothers throughout the world, at different dates of the year according to the country. Its contemporary origin would be referred to Mother's Friendship Day and Mother's Day Meetings organized in 1865 or 1868 by Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis, in which mothers met to exchange views on various current issues

The first celebrations of Mother's Day date back to ancient Greece, where Rhea, the mother of the gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades, was honored.

The Romans also called this celebration Hilaria when they acquired it from the Greeks. It was celebrated on March 15 in the temple of Cibeles and for three days offerings were made.

The Catholics transformed these celebrations to honor the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. In the Catholic calendar on December 8 the feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated, a date that Catholics adopted for the celebration of Mother's Day.

In England towards century XVII, a similar event took place, also related to the Virgin, that was denominated Sunday of the Mothers. The children went to mass and returned to their homes with gifts for their mothers. Also, since many people worked for wealthy people and did not have the opportunity to be in their homes, that Sunday was given the day off to visit their families.
