Partiendo de una novela de autor anónimo del siglo XIV titulada Flamenca, Rosalía desarrolla su propia trama para entregar una obra redonda que no es solo una colección de canciones. El resultado es tan personal como inclasificable y por eso ella misma reflexiona en voz alta:
Rosalía’s second album, El Mal Querer, includes 11 new songs. In the disc there are sounds that go from the seguidilla, to the tango and the fandango, that are fused with own rhythms of the pop or the electronics, since Rosalía listened to many pop songs in the 2000 and wanted to do a tribute to that music.
